Jargon Buster
Random Access Memory (RAM) – This is the physical memory that is inside of your computer.
Megabyte(MB) – A megabyte is a measurement of memory that a computer has.
Gigabyte(GB) – As above, a gigabyte is a measurement of memory. 1gb is equal to 1024mb.
Disk Image – A disk image is a copy of an already installed application or operating system. This then can be copied onto a new hard disk meaning that you do not have to install the operating system
Hard Disk – A hard disk is the disk inside your computer that holds all of the information about things that you have saved, applications installed etc.
Operating System – The operating systems is the large overall application that controls what your computer does. This is the interface that you see when you are in Windows etc
Hardware – A piece of hardware is a piece of physical equipment that is normally installed inside your computer. This can be RAM, a Hard disk etc
Software – Software is an application that you install on your PC so that you can do something. An example of this is Microsoft Outlook which is used to view emails
Driver – A driver is a piece of software that makes a piece of hardware or a device work
